Gancho Slavov is a Dr Germinal Chair and Reader in Crop Genomics at Aberystwyth University's Institute of Biological, Environmental, and Rural Sciences (IBERS). His research bridges fundamental and applied population genetics and genomics, focusing on bioenergy crops (Miscanthus, Populus) and livestock conservation (Welsh sheep breeds).
- Key Collaborations: US DOE BioEnergy Science Center, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
- Research Themes: Genomic selection, bioenergy crop domestication, forest tree genetics, microbiome interactions, conservation programs
Recent Publications highlight advances in Miscanthus biomass optimization, Pinus radiata microbiome genetics, and Arabidopsis methylation-transcription relationships. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (Climate Action, Life on Land).
Supervision & Projects: Mentored PhD student Sarah Beynon (Welsh sheep genomics) and postdoc Chris Davey (Populus/Miscanthus). Current projects include AI-driven plant selection for net zero (EPSRC) and genomics-assisted forest tree breeding (US DOE).
