Prof. Petar Zhelev Stoyanov is a faculty member at the University of Forestry, Sofia, affiliated with the Faculty of Forestry and Department of Dendrology. His career spans over 25 years of research in population and evolutionary genetics of forest species.
- Education: M.Sc. (1985) and Ph.D. (1992) in Forestry/Forest Genetics from University of Forestry, Sofia
Research focuses on genetic diversity, phylogeography, and conservation genetics of forest trees, including Pinus, Platanus, Quercus, and Sorbus species. His work employs allozymes, microsatellites, and morphological markers to study population structure and adaptation.
Recent publications highlight trends in forest genetics (2011-2002), emphasizing phylogeography, gene conservation, and adaptive traits. Articles span journals like PLoS ONE, Canadian Journal of Forest Research, and Heredity, covering keywords such as population genetics, biodiversity, and tree systematics.
He teaches courses in Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Natural Plant Resources, and Biodiversity Conservation, maintaining an active research presence in Balkan forest ecosystems.
