Professor Iain Donnison is Head of the Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University, where he leads research on plant and environmental sciences with a focus on temperate and tropical grasses. He holds a PhD and is a key figure in climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, particularly through the use of perennial biomass crops like Miscanthus.
His research interests center on environmental stress responses, biomass crop development, and sustainable agricultural systems. He investigates how plant genetics and agronomy can be leveraged to enhance carbon sequestration, improve soil health, and support net-zero goals. His work integrates molecular biology, field trials, and policy engagement to translate scientific findings into real-world applications.
The most recent articles highlight a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research combining plant science, environmental modeling, and policy development. Key themes include the upscaling of Miscanthus production, modeling of canopy development for yield optimization, carbon allocation in crops, and the integration of biomass into circular bioeconomies. There is a clear emphasis on climate change mitigation, sustainable land use, and the development of policy frameworks for perennial crops in Europe and the UK.

Professor Donnison leads multiple externally funded research projects, including the UKRI Perennial Biomass Crops for Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrator and the BBSRC FoodBioSystems programme. He actively collaborates with industry, government agencies such as BEIS and Defra, and international research networks. His advisory roles with the Committee on Climate Change and the NFU highlight his influence on national policy. He supervises research students and collaborates extensively with colleagues across disciplines.
He leads or co-leads major research initiatives including the BEACON Biorefining Centre and the UKRI Supergen Bioenergy Hub. His team works on AI-assisted plant breeding, techno-economic assessments of waste recovery, and spatial modeling for land use decisions. These efforts are part of a broader vision to integrate scientific innovation with sustainable rural development and climate resilience.
