Naresh Thevathasan is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph's School of Environmental Sciences, specializing in agroforestry systems and carbon sequestration. Born in Sri Lanka, he developed early interests in sustainable agriculture through tropical farming systems. His research program examines carbon dynamics in temperate agroforestry, biomass crop production, and riparian ecosystems, with projects funded by OMAFRA, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Environment Canada.
Research Focus: Dr. Thevathasan's work spans:
- Long-term soil carbon sequestration in bioenergy crops
- Greenhouse gas mitigation through agroforestry land-use
- Nutrient cycling in riparian buffer systems
- Biomass crop sustainability on marginal lands
Publication Trends: His recent articles demonstrate consistent focus on terrestrial carbon dynamics, with evolving emphasis on microbial processes in greenhouse gas emissions and system-level carbon accounting in diverse riparian ecosystems. Methodological advances include allometric modeling and isotopic tracing.
Awards:
- Honorary Doctor of Science from Kwame Nkrumah University (2011)
Advising: Currently retired and not accepting new graduate students. Previously supervised research on nutrient cycling and biomass crop sustainability.
Laboratories: Manages field research sites at the Guelph Agroforestry Research Station and collaborates with the Analytical Lab Services facility.
