Jean-Noël Castorio serves as an Associate Professor (Maître de Conférences) at Université Le Havre Normandie, where he is a permanent member of the GRIC Research Laboratory under section 21 of the French academic classification system. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities (UFR LSH - Unité de Formation et de Recherche en Lettres, Sciences Humaines) and works within the Department of History and Archaeology.
His research focuses on Roman archaeology, particularly the funerary practices and monuments of Gaul during the Roman period. Castorio has developed significant expertise in the archaeology of northeastern Gaul, with special attention to the Langres region (ancient Andemantunnum) and the Moselle area. His work bridges classical archaeology, historical studies, and material culture analysis, with particular emphasis on the transition from Celtic to Roman societies and the development of funerary landscapes during the Imperial period.
Castorio's publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output from 2000-2019, with particular concentration between 2010-2017. His research shows strong thematic continuity around funerary archaeology, with publications addressing monumental enclosures, mausolea, early funerary monuments, and ritual practices in Roman Gaul. He has also contributed to broader studies of Roman imperial representation through works on Caligula and Messaline, demonstrating his engagement with both material culture and historical narrative.
His scholarly contributions include significant work on the Gigantomachy of Pergamon, showing his broader engagement with Hellenistic and Roman art beyond Gaulish contexts. Castorio appears to collaborate with major French archaeological institutions including the École française de Rome and has contributed to museum catalogues such as those for the Musée d'archéologie nationale de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
