Yvan Maligorne is a Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Brest, France, where he is affiliated with the Breton and Celtic Research Center (CRBC, EA 4451). His academic work focuses on the architectural history of Roman Gaul and North Africa, with particular expertise in Western Gaul (including Lyonnaise, Belgian, and Narbonne regions) and Proconsular Africa. He has made significant contributions to understanding ancient architectural decoration, monumental structures, and urban development in these regions.
Dr. Maligorne's research interests span multiple aspects of Roman provincial architecture:
- Ancient architectural decoration in Western Gaul (Lyonnaise, Belgian, Narbonne)
- Monumental architecture in Proconsular Africa, particularly at Dougga (Tunisia)
- Marble architecture and building techniques during the Imperial period
- Roman urban planning and development in Gaul
- Funerary monuments and practices in Roman provinces
His recent publications reveal consistent trends in studying architectural decoration across Roman provinces, with particular attention to how local communities adapted Roman architectural styles while maintaining regional identities. Maligorne's work often examines the chronological development of architectural styles from the Augustan period through the Severan era, highlighting the complex interplay between imperial models and local traditions in provincial architecture.
Dr. Maligorne has organized numerous academic events that have advanced research in his field:
- Co-organization of the seminar on "Ensembles lapidaires et architecture antique et médiévale" since 2019
- Organization of the seminar "L'ouest de la Gaule à l'époque romaine" since 2005
- Organization of two colloquia on "Marbres et architecture dans les Gaules romaines" in Narbonne (2016 and 2018)
He has held significant administrative roles, serving as Director of the History Department from 2017 to 2023 and as Assessor at the UFR Letters and Social Sciences since September 2022. His research projects include participation in a Tunisian-French project on Dougga's architecture (2017-2024) and studies of Narbonne's ancient architecture since 2012.
