Jean-Marie Basset

Jean-Marie Basset is a Distinguished Professor in the Physical Science and Engineering division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where he previously served as Director of the KAUST Catalysis Center (2009-2017). His foundational research established the field of Surface Organometallic Chemistry, creating connections between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

Research focuses on molecular-level catalyst design with applications in energy and environmental solutions. Key discoveries include:

• Metathesis of alkanes for C-C bond activation
• Transformation of polyethylene to diesel fuel
• Non-oxidative coupling of methane
• Direct activation of dinitrogen on single metal atoms

Honored with memberships in four national academies and recipient of the Max Plank Award, Alexander Von Humboldt Award, and multiple honorary doctorates. Previously served as Research Director at CNRS, President of IDECAT, and Scientific Director of CPE Lyon.
