Professor Jean Allain is a leading academic in international law, holding the position of Professor of International Law at Monash University's Faculty of Law. He has served as Associate Dean, Research (2018-2020) and Associate Dean, International (2021-2023). He also holds adjunct and visiting professorships at institutions such as the University of Pretoria and Univesitas Padjadjaran. His expertise spans public international law, human rights law, international humanitarian law, and legal history, with a focus on slavery, forced labor, and trafficking. He has advised organizations like Anti-Slavery International and contributed to global antislavery frameworks. His research addresses the prohibition of slavery, legal definitions, and implementation gaps in domestic legislation.
Education includes a Doctorate from the Graduate Institute for International Studies at the University of Geneva, with fellowships at the Organization of American States and the Asser Institute. His career includes roles at American University Cairo and Queen’s University Belfast before joining Monash in 2017.
Research interests emphasize the historical and modern dimensions of slavery, legal frameworks, and human rights. His recent publications analyze business models of modern slavery, legal prohibitions, and global implementation challenges. He has led projects like the 'Invisible Children' initiative, addressing rights-based approaches for marginalized populations.
Prof Allain actively contributes to policy through submissions to government inquiries, such as Australia’s Modern Slavery Act, and collaborates with international institutions. His work intersects with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing poverty, inequality, and justice.
