معرفی
Professor Jayne Yack is a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Carleton University, leading the Neuroethology Research Lab. Her work focuses on insect sensory systems, particularly acoustic and vibratory communication in insects like butterflies, bark beetles, and caterpillars. She employs interdisciplinary methods including bioacoustics, neurophysiology, and comparative anatomy to understand how sensory systems drive adaptive behaviors.
Research Interests:
Neuroethology integrates animal behavior and neuroscience to explore how nervous systems generate behavior. Yack’s lab investigates:
- Insect hearing mechanisms (e.g., butterfly wing ears)
- Evolution of acoustic signals in caterpillars
- Bark beetle vibrational communication
- Vibration-based territorial disputes in caterpillars
Advising & Grants:
Yack mentors graduate and undergraduate students, with recent milestones including:
- Elham’s successful PhD candidacy (2022)
- Leo Turchen’s PhD thesis defense (2021)
- Chanchal Yadav’s Thesis Excellence Award (2021)
Labs/Teams:
Based in the Nesbitt Building, her lab uses cutting-edge tools like laser vibrometry and high-speed video. Collaborations span entomology, ecology, and evolutionary biology.
