Jayanta Mondol is Professor of Solar Energy Technologies and Research Director at Ulster University's Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment, appointed in 2019. He leads the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning research unit and previously served as Course Director for Architectural Engineering programs. His office is located at Belfast Campus, Room BC-05-143, 2-24 York Street.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) & MSc Physics - Visva-Bharati University, India
- MTech Energy Science & Technology - Jadavpur University, India
- PhD in Solar Energy - Ulster University (2004)
Research Interests: Professor Mondol specializes in solar energy conversion systems with emphasis on building-integrated applications. His work spans photovoltaic/thermal hybrids, nanofluid-enhanced solar collectors, multifunctional building facades, and off-grid renewable systems. Current investigations focus on MXene-based nanofluids, concentrating PV glazing, and thermal diode technologies for energy-efficient buildings. His research consistently addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals through climate adaptation solutions.
Publications Focus: Recent articles demonstrate strong emphasis on nanofluid-enhanced PV/T systems, building-integrated solar technologies, and sustainable thermal management. Dominant themes include energy efficiency optimization, novel material applications (MXene, carbon-dots), and computational modeling of renewable systems. Tropical climate applications and circular economy principles feature prominently in his 2022-2025 publications.
Awards & Honors:
- Best Full-Length Paper in Solar Energy Journal (2006)
- World Renewable Energy Congress Best Paper (2010)
- EUROSUN Best Poster Award (2012)
- Ulster University Best PhD Thesis (2005)
- Fellow of Higher Education Academy
Leadership & Projects: As Principal Investigator, secured £3M+ funding from EPSRC, Innovate UK, Royal Society and EU for projects including 'SolaFin2Go' and 'SolaNetwork'. Supervised 10 PhD students. Current projects include Design of Concentrating PV Glazing Systems (£450k, Royal Society) and Climate Adaptation in Underserved Communities (£620k). Serves on Royal Society of Ulster Architects' Climate Emergency Committee.
Professional Engagement: Editorial Board Member for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Buildings journals. Technical committee member for international conferences. Regular reviewer for 30+ journals. External examiner for Dublin Institute of Technology and London South Bank University.
