Mervyn Smyth is a Reader in Solar Thermal Technologies at Ulster University's Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment. He holds a 1st Class BEng (Hons) and PhD in solar energy research from Ulster University, with prior industry experience in HVAC. His academic roles include Lecturer at Ulster University, Senior Lecturer/Teaching Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington, and positions at Griffith University and Domaine Carneros Estate.

Dr. Smyth's research spans solar thermal systems, photovoltaics, anaerobic digestion, and building integrated solar technologies. He has over 25 years of experience in experimental characterization of solar energy systems and passive solar design for agriculture. His work includes collaborations on thermal diodes for sub-Saharan solar deployment and façade-integrated switchable insulation.
Dr. Smyth contributes to international projects such as SolaFin2Go and SwanaSmartStore Digital Kgotla, focusing on sustainable energy in Africa. He serves on editorial boards and external examination committees.
