Dr. Jay Medenwaldt is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Northwestern College. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Baylor University, with a focus on the Psychology of Religion and Virtue. Prior to his academic role, he served nine years in the U.S. Air Force as a behavioral scientist, teaching psychology at the Air Force Academy, consulting, and conducting research. His interdisciplinary background includes a Master of Divinity from Denver Seminary and a Master of Arts in Psychological Sciences from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.
His research interests span the psychology of religion, gratitude toward God, adolescent religiosity, and critiques of spiritual frameworks like the Enneagram. He has published in journals such as The International Journal for the Psychology of Religion, Current Opinion in Psychology, and Adolescent Research Review. Dr. Medenwaldt is also working on a book offering a scientific and theological critique of the Enneagram system.
He has presented at conferences including the Christian Association of Psychological Studies and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, focusing on intersections of psychology, theology, and spiritual practices. His work emphasizes empirical approaches to understanding religious experiences and their psychological impacts.
