Jay Cephas is an Assistant Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture at Princeton University, where he also serves as a Research Director at the Princeton Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities. His research focuses on labor, technology, and identity in urban environments, with a particular emphasis on racial capitalism and spatial practices. Cephas holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and an M.Arch. from the University of Detroit Mercy, and has taught at institutions including Harvard, the University of Michigan, and Cranbrook Academy of Art.

His work explores how Black labor and intellectual contributions shape built environments, as seen in his forthcoming book analyzing Fordism and urbanization in Detroit, and his Graham Foundation-supported Black Architects Archive. Cephas’s research also extends to cooperative housing initiatives and geospatial urban analysis through Studio Plat.
