Prof Javier Garcia Oliva is a Professor of Law and Head of the Department of Law at the University of Manchester. He holds visiting roles at institutions including the University of Oxford, University College London, and Schulich School of Law (Canada). His research focuses on Law and Religion, Constitutional Law, and Administrative Law. He has contributed to understanding the relationship between public authorities and religious denominations in the UK, devolution of powers, and legal frameworks around religious freedom, education, and human rights.
Education: B.A., LLM, and PhD (cum laude) from the University of Cádiz. Previous roles include Research Fellowship at Cardiff University’s Centre for Law and Religion and lecturer positions at Bangor University and the University of Manchester.
Research Interests span:
- Legal dimensions of religious freedom and its conflicts with other rights
- Devolution and governance structures in the UK and Europe
- Administrative law, particularly tribunals
- Impact of Brexit on legal frameworks
Notable contributions include work on religious symbols, LGBTQIA+ rights, and church autonomy. His recent articles address topics like pagan practices, burial rights, and UK constitutional challenges. He leads the Centre for Digital Trust and Society project and serves as Membership Secretary of the UK Constitutional Law Association.
Awards include the 2019 Making a Difference Award. Media engagements include BBC commentary on Catalan elections and constitutional law matters.
