Rev’d Dr Helen Hall is an Associate Professor at Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University, where she serves as Associate Director of the Centre for Rights and Justice. A qualified solicitor and Anglican priest, she holds teaching responsibilities in Tort, Contract, and Family Law. Her academic leadership includes serving as Editor in Chief of the Nottingham Law Journal and NLS Blog.
Her research centers on the intersection of Law and Religion/Belief, with specialized expertise in Law and the Supernatural, particularly exorcism/deliverance ministry. She also publishes extensively on Constitutional Law, Human Rights, Legal History, and Tort. Hall co-authors the “Balancing Beliefs” project with Dr. Javier García Oliva, exploring constitutional culture through comparative studies of Quebec, Scotland, and Catalonia, culminating in her 2023 monograph Constitutional Culture, Independence and Rights. Her work critically examines how religious dimensions permeate British constitutional frameworks while safeguarding diverse beliefs.
Hall actively engages with contemporary legal debates, advising on conversion therapy bans and legal protections against accusations of malevolent magic or spirit possession. Her publications reveal a consistent focus on religious freedom within liberal democracies, children’s rights in religious contexts, and the constitutional implications of supernatural beliefs.

Hall collaborates extensively with Dr. García Oliva on religious freedom projects and contributes to legal reform discussions regarding vulnerable populations. Her external activities bridge academic research with practical legal advocacy, particularly in safeguarding religious minorities while protecting individuals from belief-based abuses.
She maintains active research laboratories through the Centre for Rights and Justice and the Balancing Beliefs project, directing interdisciplinary teams examining constitutional culture, religious freedom, and supernatural legal dimensions. Current work explores pandemic-era legal responses, educational frameworks for religious diversity, and the legal status of minority religious practices including paganism and witchcraft.
