Jatin Nathwani is a Professor and Ontario Research Chair in Public Policy for Sustainable Energy at the University of Waterloo, serving as the founding Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE). He holds cross-appointments in the Departments of Management Sciences and Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Environment. His work focuses on global energy transitions, policy frameworks for sustainable energy access, and risk management in energy systems. Nathwani leads initiatives such as the 'Global Change Initiative - Affordable Energy for Humanity,' fostering international collaborations to address energy poverty and decarbonization.
Education: BEng, MEng, and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto (1974–1979), with P.Eng. licensure in Ontario since 1980.
Research interests include energy policy, risk assessment of energy infrastructure, sustainable technology adoption, and governance of emerging energy systems. He has contributed to over 100 publications, 7 books, and testified before parliamentary committees on energy and isotope supply crises.
Key initiatives include the Ontario Smart Grid Forum, the Ontario Centre of Excellence (OCE) flagship projects, and international agreements with institutions like UPES (India). He co-developed the Life Quality Index (LQI), a policy tool for resource-constrained decision-making.
Awards include the Ontario Research Chair position. He teaches courses on energy sustainability, risk management, and civil engineering design at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
