Jasper van Houcke is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Researcher at the Aquaculture in Delta Areas research group at HZ University of Applied Sciences. He has been with the group since 2005, focusing on inland aquaculture involving algae, shellfish, ragworms, and fish. Since June 2021, he also serves as Leading Lecturer of the Applied Research Centre Technology Water Environment (ARC TWE), overseeing ten technical research groups at HZ.
Education:
- Bachelor in Aquatic Ecotechnology from HZ University of Applied Sciences
- Master's in Aquaculture from Ghent University
- PhD from Wageningen University (Title: 'Biochemical composition, volatile organic compounds, sensory and consumer evaluation of Pacific cupped oysters during land-based refinement')
Research Interests: Jasper specializes in aquaculture innovation, particularly in land-based shellfish cultivation, sensory analysis of seafood quality, and integrated multi-trophic systems. His work explores how feed and production systems impact oyster taste and quality. He leads projects like Alternative land-based shellfish cultivation, Ecodami, and Flipfarm in Waterdunen, addressing sustainable aquaculture practices and coastal ecosystem engineering.
Leadership & Collaboration: As ARC TWE Leading Lecturer, he coordinates interdisciplinary research across water, energy, and environmental domains. His projects involve partnerships with organizations like Stichting Zeeschelp and Meromar Zeeland to advance sustainable aquaculture technologies.
