Jasper Foolen is an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), affiliated with the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS). His research explores mechanobiological processes in tendon/ligament degeneration and healing, utilizing biomimetic models and computational approaches to develop regenerative strategies for musculoskeletal injuries.
Education:
BSc Mechanical Engineering (Fontys, 2000), BSc/MSc Biomedical Engineering (TU/e, 2003/2005), PhD (TU/e, 2009) on periosteal involvement in bone growth. Postdoctoral training included positions at TU/e (2009-2013) and ETH Zurich (2013-2016) before returning to TU/e as faculty.
Research Focus:
Mechanobiology of tendon/ligament injuries, cellular organization in 3D tissues, fibrosis mechanisms, and development of diagnostic platforms like in vitro tissue remodeling systems. Recent work investigates cellular junctions and 3D tissue healing capacities.
Awards & Recognition:
- Jury Award Best Scientific Paper (2021)
- European Society of Biomechanics SM Perren Award (2010)
Leads projects on cellular mechanotransduction and collaborates on European initiatives like the TRIANKLE project for 3D-bioprinted ankle implants.
