Associate Professor Jason Stoessel is a leading academic in Musicology and Digital Humanities at the University of New England (UNE), affiliated with the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. He previously served as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of HASSE and contributed to research strategy at institutional levels. His research explores music’s intellectual, social, and emotional functions in historical and modern contexts, with a focus on medieval and early modern eras. Stoessel’s work bridges traditional and digital methodologies, including computational analysis of music notation and manuscripts.
- Education: Combined BMus/BA, BA Honours (with University Medal), and PhD from UNE.
- Teaching: Lectures on global and Western music history, theory, and analysis, emphasizing critical thinking and interdisciplinary skills.
Research Interests: Music from 1250–1700, medieval music theory, polyphonic song, Mass composition, and applications of digital tools in musicology. His grants include ARC-funded projects on canonic techniques in early 17th-century Rome and the history of emotions.
Awards: Recognized for teaching excellence, including a 2010 UNE Teaching Commendation and 2009 School Award for innovative online music education.
Supervision: Guides HDR students in medieval musicology, music theory, and computational approaches. Collaborates internationally on projects like the Balzan Programme’s “Global History of Music.”
Labs/Teams: Active in the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions and digital humanities initiatives, advancing music encoding standards (MEI) and manuscript analysis.
