He specializes in 18th-century literature and culture, focusing on topics such as masculinity studies, the early novel, and the history of criticism. His work examines how literary forms and cultural discourses shaped notions of identity, class, and social hierarchy during the long 18th century. Solinger holds a B.S. in Labor Relations from Cornell University and advanced degrees in English from San Diego State University and Brown University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2004.
His research has been published in leading journals like Early American Literature and Genre, alongside entries in comprehensive references such as the Oxford Encyclopedia of British Literature. His monograph Becoming the Gentleman (2012) interrogates evolving notions of masculinity in British literature from 1660–1815. Current projects include a book analyzing Jane Austen’s critical reception and its entanglement with the discipline of literary studies.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on 18th-century literature, literary criticism, and genre studies. His scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary theoretical frameworks, emphasizing the interplay between literature, politics, and culture.
