Jason O'Neil is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Global & Public Law at UNSW Sydney, part of the Faculty of Law and Justice. He is also a Scientia PhD Candidate in the School of Social Sciences. His research focuses on Indigenous self-determination, cultural resurgence, and public policy reform. O'Neil teaches Principles of Public Law and Indigenous Peoples and the Law, and previously led the Indigenous Pre-Law Program. He actively supports Indigenous legal education through roles like Executive Director of Ngalaya Indigenous Corporation and Academic Co-Lead of the UNSW Teaching for Equity initiative. His work emphasizes Indigenous sovereignty and policy responses to First Nations rights.
Education: Bachelor of Laws (UNSW), Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) (UNSW), Graduate Certificate in Wiradjuri Language, Culture and Heritage (Charles Sturt University).
Research Interests: Indigenous Studies, public law, public policy, self-determination, cultural authority, and legal systems reform. His PhD explores redefining Indigenous self-determination in Australian public policy.
Professional Affiliations: Fellow of the Australian Human Rights Institute, Associate Fellow of Advance HE. Previously Director of Indigenous Legal Education (2021–24) and Research Assistant at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.
Publications span constitutional law critiques, Indigenous politics analysis, and policy coordination studies. He advocates for First Nations sovereignty through legal and policy frameworks.
