Jason Edward Lewis

Jason Edward Lewis is a Professor of Design and Computation Arts at Concordia University, holding the University Research Chair in Computational Media and the Indigenous Future Imaginary. A digital media theorist, poet, and software designer, he founded the Obx Laboratory for Experimental Media to explore computation as a creative and cultural material through research/creation projects that integrate conceptual, critical, creative, and technical dimensions.

His educational background includes dual bachelor's degrees from Stanford University: a B.S. in Symbolic Systems (Cognitive Science) and a B.A. in German Studies (Philosophy), followed by an M.Phil. in Design from the Royal College of Art.

Lewis's research centers on reimagining computational media through Indigenous epistemologies, with focus areas including Indigenous futures, art-led technology methodologies, and the development of Indigenous protocols for artificial intelligence. His work bridges digital media theory with practical applications in video game design, emergent media history, and experimental storytelling, emphasizing cultural sovereignty in technological development.

Lewis co-directs multiple research initiatives including Abundant Intelligences, the Indigenous Futures Research Centre, the Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace network, and the Skins Workshops on Aboriginal Storytelling and Video Game Design. Previously, he led the Initiative for Indigenous Futures and co-directed the Indigenous Protocol and AI Workshops that produced the groundbreaking Indigenous Protocol and Artificial Intelligence Position Paper.
