Ashlee Bird serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame. A Western Abenaki scholar originally from Vermont's Champlain Valley, she bridges Native American studies, media studies, and game design to challenge colonial narratives in digital spaces through her academic and creative practice.
Her educational background includes:

Dr. Bird's research centers on decolonial frameworks for digital sovereignty, with core expertise in Native American representation, Visual Sovereignty, and Decolonial Media within gaming and popular culture. She develops "synthetic Indigenous identity" methodologies to replace colonial game design patterns, focusing on Indigenous futures through critical analysis of video game spaces and player experiences.
Current projects feature a book manuscript analyzing player relationships with the Red Dead Redemption series. Her creative output includes two exhibited video games—"One Small Step" (2018) and "Full of Birds" (2019)—featured at ImagineNATIVE Film & Media Festival, alongside additional artworks showcased in seven group and solo exhibitions. She previously contributed to UC Davis ModLab's experimental media research initiatives.
