Jason Condon is an Associate Professor in Soil Science at Charles Sturt University (CSU), located in Wagga Wagga, Australia. His research focuses on practical soil science solutions for agricultural challenges, particularly acid soil management, salinity, and climate change adaptation. He holds a BAgrSci(Hons) from La Trobe University and a PhD from Charles Sturt University.
Dr. Condon has taught soil science at CSU since 1996, emphasizing industry-relevant curricula. He co-authored the e-textbook STute: Tutorials in Soil Science to enhance student understanding of soil chemistry. His research collaborations include Can Tho University (Vietnam) and NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), focusing on soil nutrition, crop production, and greenhouse gas mitigation.
Key areas of research include: acid soil amelioration strategies, nitrogen cycling in pastures, and sustainable crop rotations in saline environments. He has led ACIAR-funded projects addressing climate change impacts in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, promoting alternative crops like soybean and quinoa. His work integrates laboratory analyses with farmer-participatory monitoring systems.
Condon has supervised 6 PhD, 1 Master’s, and 16 Honours students. His industry linkages ensure research outputs are directly applicable to farming communities. He has secured grants from MLA, GRDC, and NSW DPI for projects like subsoil acidity management and organic amendment trials. His teaching and research emphasize bridging academic knowledge with on-ground agricultural practices.
Recent work includes developing irrigation schedules using Chameleon soil sensors and exploring Bayesian models for rice-shrimp aquaculture systems. He advocates for soil health improvement through strategic liming and organic amendments, with a focus on long-term agronomic sustainability.
