معرفی
Dr. J Sergio Moroni serves as a Lecturer in Crop Science at Charles Sturt University's School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences, focusing on plant-soil interactions for abiotic stress tolerance and crop physiology under challenging environmental conditions.
His academic credentials include:
- BSc in Agricultural Science (Plant Science) from the University of Alberta, Canada
- MSc in Plant Breeding from the University of Alberta
- PhD in Plant Breeding from the University of Alberta
Research expertise spans acid soil tolerance (Al, Mn, pH), crop physiology (vernalisation, drought responses, micronutrient efficiency), and soil impedance, utilizing controlled environments, rhizolysimeters, and minirhizotron imaging for root analysis. Methodologies integrate genetic, physiological, and whole-plant approaches across glasshouse, field, and nutrient-solution systems.
Recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a concentrated effort in wheat adaptation strategies, particularly developing '100-day wheats' for late sowing windows and heat resilience. This work addresses critical Australian agricultural challenges including reproductive frost sensitivity, water scarcity, and shifting climate patterns through integrated breeding and agronomic solutions.
Scientific awards: No awards documented in provided materials.
Supervision includes co-mentorship of Master's student Brett McVittie (2008-2012) and current HDR supervision. Major funding includes a $1.3M GRDC project on genetic reduction of wheat's reproductive frost sensitivity.
Based at the Gulbali Research Institute, Dr. Moroni maintains active collaboration with NSW DPI and the Grains Research & Development Corporation, with recent work extending to Mekong River Delta adaptation projects.
