Professor Jaroslav Daneš, an Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Hradec Králové (UHK), is a key figure in the study of ancient Greek political thought and the reception of classical philosophy in Central/Eastern Europe. Since 2023, he has led the international research project Oral History and Classics, funded by UHK, which records the personal and professional trajectories of European classical scholars. His collaborations with Tomasz Mróz (University of Zielona Góra) and others focus on uncovering connections between political contexts and interpretations of Plato’s Republic in Polish debates from the 19th century to the Cold War era.
Active in organizing academic events, he co-hosted the 2024 Classics: Past, Present, and Future conference at UHK’s Faculty of Philosophy. He also supervised the 2025 doctoral defense of Mariam Sargsyan, who studied Henryk Jakubanis’s reception of ancient philosophy. His research interests bridge classical studies with historiographical analysis, emphasizing how political shifts shaped interpretations of Plato and Aristotle in Poland.
Recent talks and projects highlight his role in disseminating knowledge about Plato’s legacy, including a 2025 lecture series for international students on Ancient Greek Democracy and Its Legacy, and contributions to debates at the 12th Seminar of Historians of Polish Philosophy and the 3rd Congress on Polish Philosophy. His work underscores the interplay between individual scholar experiences and broader disciplinary evolution.
