Dr. Kenneth Moore is a Senior Lecturer in the History of Ideas at Teesside University’s School of Arts and Creative Industries (SACI), affiliated with the Institute for Collective Place Leadership. His research bridges ancient philosophy, political theory, and modern cultural studies, with a focus on Plato’s Laws, utopianism, and the reception of classical antiquity in contemporary thought. He holds a doctorate analyzing Plato’s political and sexual ethics through gender theory and cultural studies frameworks.
Moore’s academic work includes two monographs: Sex and the Second-Best City (Routledge) on Plato’s Laws, and Plato, Politics and a Practical Utopia (forthcoming) on ancient urban planning. His current research explores applications of classical political thought to modern constitutionalism and cosmopolitanism. He teaches courses on Ancient Greek/Roman history, Alexander the Great’s legacy, Chaucer’s England, and early-modern witchcraft.
His research outputs span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews, addressing topics like Pythagorean influences in Tolkien’s Silmarillion, Xenophon’s economic policies, and the reception of classical ideas during WWII. He actively supervises PhD students in ancient history topics and third-year dissertations on classical antiquity through medieval eras.
Key themes in his work include interdisciplinary approaches to classical texts, the intersection of ancient and modern political thought, and the cultural legacy of antiquity in contemporary discourse. His writing style blends rigorous scholarly analysis with accessible historical narratives.
