Carol Atack is a Bye-fellow and Director of Studies in Classics at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has held research and teaching roles at institutions including Oxford and Harvard. Her research focuses on classical Greek political thought, particularly the works of Plato and Xenophon, and explores themes like temporality, democracy, and monarchy. She has authored books such as The Discourse of Kingship in Classical Greece and edited volumes on democracy and political theory. Atack is also affiliated with projects like the Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World and contributes to journals like Polis. Her work bridges ancient and modern political thought, examining concepts like citizenship, gender, and leadership in antiquity.
Education: PhD in Classics (2014, University of Cambridge), MPhil in Classics (2010, Cambridge), BSc in Government (1983-86, University of London).
Research interests include Greek political philosophy, Athenian democracy, and the reception of classical ideas in modern contexts. She has received the Roman Society MA dissertation prize for her 2024 work on Ausonius. Atack actively participates in academic networks like the Women’s Classical Committee and the Legacy of Greek Political Thought group.
