Professor Carol Dougherty is a T.B.L. Webster Fellow at the Institute of Classical Studies and holds a Professorship in Classical Studies at Wellesley College. Her research focuses on mobility and settlement in archaic and classical Greece, with a recent emphasis on the intersection of Homer’s literature and contemporary narratives. She authored Travel and Home in Homer and Contemporary Literature, published by Oxford University Press. Current research interrogates the figure of the metic (foreign resident) in Greek tragedy through Jacques Derrida’s discourse on hospitality, exploring how Athenian democracy’s philosophical questions were shaped by the foreigner’s presence.
Her work transcends traditional historical analysis, prioritizing discursive inquiry over sociopolitical evidence. She has held a fellowship at the Institute of Classical Studies (8–24 May 2022), furthering interdisciplinary dialogue on classical themes.
