Janne Varjo is a Professor of Sociology of Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Research Unit KUPOLI (Sociology and Politics of Education). His research focuses on educational equality, governance of education systems, and policy dynamics, particularly in Nordic contexts. He has led eight research projects as principal investigator, addressing themes such as career guidance systems, municipal education policies, and demographic impacts on schooling.
Varjo holds a doctoral degree (2007) and a Docent title from Turku University (2020). He has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral theses, including recent advisees like Laura Vehmaa and Saija Volmar. His work bridges academic and policy spheres, with contributions to national and international policy dialogues.
Key research interests include educational transitions, governance structures, and the interplay between local and global influences on schooling. Recent publications analyze policy impacts, lifelong guidance systems, and municipal education provision. Varjo has received the Hack for Society Award (2022) and the Michael Faraday Prize (2016) for his contributions.
He actively participates in conferences, expert panels, and editorial roles, maintaining collaborations with institutions like Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. His ongoing projects explore career guidance governance in Nordic countries and the future of municipal education provision.
