Janne Autto is an Associate Professor in sociology at the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on political struggles over welfare state frameworks, social rights, and governmental aspirations, with a particular emphasis on Finnish policy contexts. He employs Bourdieusian and Foucauldian cultural theory, British cultural studies, and qualitative methods like semiotic sociology and narrative research.
He has led/co-led projects such as ReDigIm: Redistributive Imaginaries (2022-2025), funded by the Finnish Academy, and participated in HalLa: Growing High-Level Intellectual Capital in Lapland (2015-2018), supported by the European Social Fund. His work critiques austerity policies, analyzes poverty discourses in Finnish Parliament, and examines childcare reforms.
Key research interests include welfare state dynamics, cultural theory applications, and the interplay between governance and citizen resistance. His recent publications explore conceptualizations of the welfare state, legislative poverty frameworks, and socio-political discourses shaping family policies in Finland.
Advising and grants include supervision of academic works and active participation in interdisciplinary projects. His research bridges theoretical frameworks with practical policy analysis, contributing to debates on social justice and institutional change.
