Pälvi Rantala is a University Lecturer at the University of Lapland's Faculty of Social Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Global Northern Communities and Societies. Her research spans history, sociology, and cultural studies, with a focus on women's labor, Sámi handicraft, everyday life in Lapland, folklore, and social well-being through arts. She holds an adjunct professorship at the University of Turku since 2017.
Research Interests:
- History of everyday life and marginalized groups
- Cultural analysis of napping and sleep practices
- Gender studies in journalism and labor contexts
- Sámi cultural production and handicraft as labor
- Methodological innovations in arts-based research
Key Projects: Co-led the HalLa project (2015–2018) fostering intellectual capital in Lapland. Recent work includes editing Historical Research, Creative Writing, and the Past (2023) and leading studies on napping cultures.
Awards: Recipient of the Tiedepalkinto prize (2014) for collaborative research. Active in interdisciplinary projects combining art, history, and sociology.
Professional Activities: Organized workshops on Arctic tourism, presented at international conferences, and published in peer-reviewed journals. Engaged in media discussions on cultural history and societal trends.
