Juha Joona is a University Researcher in the Just Green Transition initiative at the University of Lapland. His research focuses on land use rights, environmental law, and legal history in Finnish and Swedish Lapland, with specialization in Sami rights, fishing/hunting regulations, and reindeer herding rights in state-owned Arctic territories.
Joona investigates legal frameworks governing natural resource development in the Arctic, particularly conflicts between industrial projects and indigenous land rights. His work examines procedural justice in energy transitions and community consent mechanisms for sustainable development.
Recent publications analyze landscape justice perceptions in fisheries management, Sami land rights frameworks, and equitable governance models for Arctic economies. Collaborative research includes the JUSTNORTH project developing ethical frameworks for sustainable Arctic development.
