Hannah Strauss-Mazzullo is a Senior Researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, within the Arctic Politics and Development department. Her research focuses on environmental sociology, public participation in planning, and indigenous governance in the circumpolar North. She co-leads the POST-Bothnia project (2023–2027), exploring post-anthropocentric water relations in the Bothnian Bay, and contributed to the Profi 1 strategic profiling initiative (2015–2019). Her work bridges legal studies, climate adaptation, and human-nature interactions, with a focus on everyday practices in Arctic communities.
Her research interests include extractive industries' impacts, environmental justice, and the socio-cultural dimensions of snow and ice in Finnish Lapland. Recent projects highlight interdisciplinary collaboration, such as co-editing the anthology Living and Working With Snow, Ice and Seasons in the Modern Arctic (2023). She actively participates in international conferences and workshops, addressing themes like Arctic water relations and the political dimensions of private gardens.
Key publications include analyses of reindeer herding transitions among the Sámi, climate adaptation practices, and nuclear energy governance in Finland. Her work emphasizes participatory methodologies and the intersection of legal frameworks with indigenous knowledge systems.
