Dr Tracey Jensen is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at Lancaster University, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). Her academic focus spans sociology, cultural studies, gender studies, and critical media studies. She investigates how cultural objects like policy, media, and political discourse shape societal consensus on welfare, parenting, and inequality. Her research highlights the role of 'poverty porn' in reality television and the resurgence of eugenics discourse under austerity. Jensen teaches modules ranging from undergraduate courses (e.g., MCS232, SOCL350) to postgraduate programs (GWS403, MCS940). She supervises PhD students in areas like austerity politics and reproductive justice. Notably, she authored Parenting The Crisis: the cultural politics of parent-blame (2018). Her work has been recognized with the 'Outstanding Contribution to Student Experience' award. She actively participates in academic activities, including conferences and editorial roles, and contributes to the Centre for Gender Studies.
Her research emphasizes welfare imaginaries, analyzing how welfare state narratives are constructed through media and policy. Current projects explore authoritarianism, reproductive politics, and the historical connections between eugenics and welfare systems. Jensen’s interdisciplinary approach bridges feminist theory, critical race studies, and demography to address global socio-political challenges.
Her publications span peer-reviewed articles, book reviews, and edited volumes, with recent work focusing on austerity Britain, parenting discourse, and the cultural politics of poverty. She advises students on topics such as welfare policy, feminist media studies, and the future of eugenics discourse.
