Janet Kiholm Smith is the Von Tobel Professor of Economics at Claremont McKenna College, where she has served as Dean of the Robert Day School of Economics and Finance, Chair of the Department of Economics, and Director of the Financial Economics Institute. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from UCLA and has taught at Arizona State University, USC, and Oberlin College. Her research focuses on financial economics, entrepreneurial finance, sports economics, and institutional investment dynamics. She co-authored the influential textbook Entrepreneurial Finance: Venture Capital, Deal Structure & Valuation (2019), which has been translated into multiple languages.
Her academic contributions span empirical analyses of IPO effects, institutional investor behavior, and managerial decision-making under risk. Notable works include studies on venture capital valuation frameworks, the impact of socially responsible investing by educational institutions, and the role of trade credit in mitigating informational asymmetry. She has also explored policy implications of college admission practices and corporate philanthropy strategies.
Award-winning researcher, she received the Best Paper Award at the 2011 IOSSBR Conference for her analysis of loss aversion in baseball managerial decisions. Her work frequently bridges legal, financial, and economic disciplines, evidenced by studies on SEC regulations and fraud-on-the-market theory. Currently, she directs the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, fostering applied research in entrepreneurial ecosystems.
