Dr. Janet Horrocks is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the School of Science, Engineering and Technology, Abertay University, and a member of the AbLE Academy Faculty. Her work focuses on enhancing teaching and learning methodologies, particularly in enquiry- and problem-based learning within laboratory settings. She leads the Honours Project modules for Biomedical Science programmes and contributes to biochemistry and human metabolism courses. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Society of Biology, she has received national and international recognition for her educational research.
- Education: BSc Microbiology (Imperial College London, 1985), PhD in Penicillin Acylase Kinetics (University of Newcastle, 1990s)
Research: Action research in higher education pedagogy, with a focus on student engagement and assessment innovation. Key themes include employability integration, peer assessment, and curriculum design. Over 20 years of academic service, she has published extensively on teaching methodologies and contributed to over 15 conferences/posters.
Grants: Secured £4,467 for teaching enhancement projects, including staff development and employability initiatives. Holds a patent (CA 2356452) on methods to reduce fertilization in fish and birds. Serves as an external examiner for Sunderland University’s Biomedical Science programmes and participates in the Scottish Deans of Science Education group.
Labs/Teams: Active in Abertay’s educational innovation teams and the BioDundee steering group, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
