Janet Coulter is an Associate Professor and Global Head of Fashion and Textiles at the School of Textiles & Design, Heriot-Watt University. She holds an external position as Professor at the University of Ulster. Her research focuses on AI-driven fashion design, sustainable textile economies, bio-textiles, and wearable technology. She is actively involved in PhD supervision across topics like bio-textiles for circular futures and AI in fashion education.
Her research interests include interdisciplinary collaboration, co-design methodologies, and creative entrepreneurship. Notable projects include stress-management e-textiles for students and innovative soft body armor development. She has published widely on topics bridging textile design with science and technology.
Dr. Coulter’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing circular economies and eco-friendly design practices. She is open to media inquiries and actively contributes to knowledge transfer initiatives between academia and industry.
Her academic contributions include 5 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters since 2012, with recent work highlighted in the Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice. She teaches courses on advanced textile design practices starting April 2024.
