Dr. Jane Rempel is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Sheffield’s School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. She specializes in Classical Archaeology with a focus on Greek colonization, Black Sea networks, and funerary traditions. Her research spans excavations in Turkey, Ukraine, and other regions, emphasizing material culture networks and social interaction. She co-directs the Medieval and Ancient Research Centre (MARCUS) and organizes the Medieval and Ancient Research Seminars (MARS). She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan, alongside MA and MSt degrees from Oxford and Laurier University.
Research Interests
Rempel’s work centers on Greek colonization dynamics, particularly in the Black Sea region. She explores rural landscapes, monumental burial practices, and the role of material culture in fostering connectivity. Recent projects include the Sinop Kale Excavations, investigating Hellenistic fortifications and ancient networks. Her research integrates social network analysis (SNA) to study material culture’s role in socio-political transformations.

Rempel’s publications highlight themes of Black Sea connectivity, Hellenistic fortifications, and funerary practices. Recent work includes Anatolian Studies (2020) and contributions to volumes on Mediterranean trade and Black Sea communications. Ongoing projects involve analyzing rural hinterlands and elite display through burial monuments. She collaborates internationally, funded by the British Academy and British Institute at Ankara.
Teaching & Mentorship
Rempel teaches courses on Athenian history, the Black Sea, and archaeological methodologies. She mentors graduate students on topics ranging from warrior burials to Phoenician identity. Her teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, including a popular module on ‘Thinking Through Archaeology’.
