NIKOLAS DIMAKIS

Nikolas Dimakis is an Assistant Professor in Classical Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), specializing in funerary assemblages and ancient Greek ritual practices. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham and has held postdoctoral positions at NKUA and the Research Center for the Humanities. His research focuses on funerary archaeology, childhood and gender studies, and the archaeology of ancient Greek religion, with a particular emphasis on lamps (lychnology) and Hellenistic/Roman pottery.

Education: B.A. in History and Archaeology (NKUA, 2007), M.A. and PhD in Archaeology (University of Nottingham, 2008–2012). Professional roles include contract archaeology with Greece’s Ministry of Culture (2017), adjunct teaching at NKUA and the University of Crete (2019–2020), and international lecturing.

Research interests span deathscapes, child mortality in antiquity, and the intersection of ritual practices with material culture. Key publications include Social Identity and Status in the Classical and Hellenistic Northern Peloponnese (2016) and Mortuary Variability and Social Diversity in Ancient Greece (2020). His work integrates archaeological data with anthropological and historical approaches to explore social dynamics in ancient societies.

Recent articles highlight studies of Macedonian mortuary practices, lamp typology in Halasarna (Kos), and the role of lamps in ritual contexts. His research often addresses how burial practices reflect gender, age, and social status in antiquity.

He has directed or participated in major projects such as the excavation and analysis of burial sites in Lindos and Marathon, emphasizing spatial and symbolic dimensions of death. His work bridges classical archaeology with interdisciplinary methodologies, contributing to broader debates on ancient Mediterranean cultures.
