Andrew L. Goldman

Andrew L. Goldman is a Professor of History at Gonzaga University, where he has been a faculty member since 2002 and served as Chair of the Classical Civilizations Department since 2007. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Classical Archaeology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (2000, 1993) and a B.A. in Classical Civilizations from Wesleyan University (1988). His academic career spans fieldwork in Turkey, Cyprus, and Sicily, including roles as Field Director of the Sinop Kale Excavations (2014–present) and leadership of numerous study abroad programs.

Dr. Goldman specializes in Roman archaeology and the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, with particular focus on urban life, military equipment, funerary practices, and gemstone analysis. His research, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and National Geographic, has explored Roman Gordion as a military outpost and Sinope as a Greek colony, contributing to understanding imperial expansion, trade routes, and provincial life. Recent publications analyze Roman fineware circulation, non-elite burials, and battlefield artifacts from the First Punic War.

Scientific awards include the AIA Joukowski Award for Distinguished Service (2024), two Gonzaga Exemplary Teaching Awards (2019, 2008), and the Compass Award (2014). He has directed archaeological field schools, co-curated museum exhibitions like Roman Myth and Mythmaking (2017), and received grants for community outreach initiatives. His teaching includes courses on Western Civilization, ancient cities, and field-based study programs in Turkey and Rome.
