Søren Handberg is an Associate Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History. His work focuses on the archaeology and history of ancient Greece and Rome, particularly the study of ceramics and cultural exchange in colonial contexts. He directs excavations at the ancient city of Kalydon in western Greece, investigating Hellenistic domestic structures and urban layouts. Handberg holds a PhD from Aarhus University (2010) on Black Sea pottery studies, followed by postdoctoral research and leadership roles at the Danish Institute at Athens (2012–2015). His research integrates fieldwork, material culture analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to ancient consumption patterns and colonial dynamics.
Key academic contributions include studies on Greek colonial pottery, Hellenistic urban archaeology, and the socio-cultural implications of ceramic production. His recent projects emphasize the Kalydon excavations, collaboration with Greek and Danish institutions, and applications of advanced archaeological methodologies. Handberg serves on academic councils for archaeology programs, the Norwegian Institute in Rome, and national heritage initiatives.
Publications span excavations reports, ceramic analyses, and edited volumes on topics such as sacred travel in ancient Athens, material culture in the Black Sea, and technical studies of ancient pigments. His work bridges classical archaeology with broader themes of cultural interaction, social archaeology, and Mediterranean connectivity.
