Jane Lovell is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in the Department of Tourism, Events, Hospitality and Marketing at Canterbury Christ Church University's School of Business, Law, and Policing. She currently serves as Course Director for Tourism and Events Management MSc (2021-present) and previously held the same role for Events Management and Events Planning BSc (Hons) from 2007 to 2015, while also acting as Subject Chair for Tourism, Hospitality and Events partnerships.
Her educational background includes:
- BA American Studies (University of Hull, University of New Mexico, 1987)
- MSc Tourism and Environmental Science (University of Kent, 2003)
- PhD Tourism Studies: "Cities of Imagination: Staged Authenticity in Historic Cities" (University of Kent, 2013)
Dr Lovell's research centers on cultural tourism and heritage management in historic urban environments, with emphasis on staged authenticity, World Heritage Site balancing, and tourism-heritage integration. Her work bridges academic theory and practical implementation through strategic development projects that address the complex interplay between tourism economies and conservation imperatives in sensitive locations.
She has secured significant external funding including an Interreg £285,000 project coordinating cathedrals across Canterbury, Amiens, Rouen and Rochester, which produced the Cathédrales de Lumière exhibition. Additionally, she has served as External Examiner for tourism and events programs at institutions including University of Brighton and University of Sheffield since 2012.
