Jane Hoppin is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at NC State University, affiliated with the College of Sciences. She holds the title of University Faculty Scholar (2019). Her research focuses on environmental toxicology, pesticide exposure, and community health impacts of emerging contaminants like PFAS and legacy chemicals. Dr. Hoppin leads studies in North Carolina and international settings (e.g., Costa Rica) examining links between environmental exposures and reproductive, neurodevelopmental, and respiratory health outcomes.
Her work integrates epidemiological methods with exposure assessment, statistical modeling, and biomonitoring. Key affiliations include the NIEHS-funded Center for Environmental and Health Effects of PFAS and the Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE). Her research spans pesticide exposure in agricultural communities, PFAS contamination in water and dust, and health effects of occupational and residential chemical exposures.
Recent studies include the GenX Exposure Study in Wilmington, NC, analyzing drinking water-associated PFAS and lipid outcomes, and the Infants’ Environmental Health (ISA) study in Costa Rica, tracking prenatal pesticide exposure impacts on child development. She collaborates with global teams on pesticide exposure assessment, endocrine disruption, and statistical approaches for environmental health data analysis.
Scientific contributions include over 80 peer-reviewed articles (2015–2025), emphasizing methods to quantify exposure pathways, assess chemical mixtures, and model environmental health risks. Awards include the 2019 University Faculty Scholar recognition for her impactful research and community engagement efforts.
