Dr. Jane Frankland is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton specializing in medical sociology and mixed methods research. Her work centers on cancer survivorship, self-management practices, and implementing healthcare innovations through the Centre for Psychosocial Research in Cancer (CentRIC+), where she supports the HORIZONS cohort study and Wessex Personalised Care projects.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) in Sociology, Kingston University
- PhD, Cardiff University
Frankland's research explores the social dimensions of health and illness, with emphasis on self-care behaviors, help-seeking processes, and sexual function post-cancer treatment. Her methodology expertise includes qualitative approaches and complex intervention evaluations, particularly for sensitive health topics. Current work investigates how cancer survivors mobilize support resources and the impact of personalized care pathways in recovery.
Her 2020-2025 publications reveal consistent focus on cancer survivorship across multiple tumor types (breast, prostate, colorectal, gynaecological), with recurring themes of self-management support systems, digital health tools, and pandemic impacts on cancer care. The work predominantly employs qualitative and mixed methods to address health disparities and implementation challenges in real-world settings.
No scientific awards are listed in available records.
Frankland supervises PhD candidate Riya Tiwari (Health Sciences, part-time) and has led major projects including the TrueNTH prostate cancer self-management program evaluation and the Creating Learning Environments for Compassionate Care (CLECC) mental health initiative. Her grant-funded work typically involves cross-institutional collaborations addressing cancer care improvement.
As a CentRIC+ core member and Ageing and Dementia Research group affiliate, she contributes to large-scale cohort studies and intervention development. Her lab environment emphasizes psychosocial oncology research with strong community engagement components, particularly for marginalized populations.
