Professor Jane Entwistle is a Professor of Environmental Geochemistry and Health at Northumbria University, currently serving as interim Pro-Vice Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering and Environment. She holds a PhD from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (1994), and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2002). Her research focuses on pollutants' exposure pathways, particularly metals like lead, and their implications for human health and environmental policy. She leads interdisciplinary projects such as the NIHR-funded In2Air study (2024–2027), examining energy-efficient housing's health impacts, and the UKRI-funded ECLIPS project to improve lead poisoning monitoring in children. She co-founded DustSafe and the NERC-funded Home Biome project, leveraging citizen science for global household environmental data collection.
Her work integrates academia with regulatory bodies like the UK Health Security Agency and Environment Agency. Key contributions include developing inhalation bioaccessibility methods for pollutants and assessing urban agriculture's health risks. Awards include Fellowship in the Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health. She has held leadership roles, including Head of Geography and Environmental Sciences (2008–2017) and Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education (2022–2024).
Her projects address real-world challenges like indoor air quality, industrial fire emissions, and contaminated land management. She collaborates globally, exemplified by studies in Nigeria, Mexico, and the UK. Her research bridges environmental science, public health, and policy, aiming to inform evidence-based decision-making.
