Graham Bird is a Professor in Physical Geography at Bangor University, serving as Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Dean of Education and Student Experience for the College of Science and Engineering, and Deputy Head of the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences. He actively supervises PhD students and specializes in environmental geochemistry, focusing on metal pollution in river systems.
- BSc in Geography, University of Wales, Aberystwyth (2000)
- MSc in Environmental Techniques, University of Wales, Aberystwyth (2002)
- PhD in Geochemistry, University of Wales, Aberystwyth (2005)
- PGCTHE, Aberystwyth University (2010)
His research explores environmental geochemistry, particularly the impact of metal mining and mine tailings dam failures on fluvial systems. He investigates contaminant metal speciation using Sequential Extraction Procedures (SEPs), Pb isotopes as geochemical tracers, and reconstructs pollution histories through fingerprinting techniques and mixing models. His work spans the UK and global locations like Canada, Kosovo, and Southeast Asia.
Recent publications highlight his studies on the Mount Polley mine tailings spill in Canada, global metal mining impacts on river systems, and water quality management in transboundary basins. Key keywords include mine tailings, fluvial geochemistry, contaminant transport, and environmental remediation.
- National Teaching Fellow (2023)
- Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2022)
- PGCTHE in Teaching Higher Education (2010)
He has secured grants totaling over £170,000, including projects like the Global Innovation Initiative (2015) and NERC-funded research (2014) on mine spill impacts. He collaborates internationally and contributes to mine reclamation strategies. As an Associate Editor for Applied Geochemistry and external examiner at the University of Lincoln, he supports academic governance.
