John Grattan is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, UK. He holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield and has held roles including Senior Lecturer, Reader, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience and International. His research focuses on volcanic hazards, environmental impacts of eruptions, cultural responses to extreme events, ecotoxicology, and ancient industrial legacies.
Education: PhD in Environmental and Archaeological Science from the University of Sheffield. Notable roles include board memberships with the QAA, HEFCW, and UniversitiesWales. Returned to research and teaching after serving as interim vice-chancellor.
Research interests span volcanic disasters, environmental archaeology, metallurgical pollution, and geochemical records. Over 87 publications include studies on Wadi Faynan, Jordan, volcanic gas impacts, and cultural responses to disasters. Projects include INEA (activity area identification in Neolithic sites) and SusNet Wales (blended learning environments).
