Ben O Ceallaigh is a Lecturer in Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth University's Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies. His research focuses on the intersection of political economy and minority language vitality, particularly in Irish-speaking communities and the impact of neoliberal policies post-2008 economic crisis. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and has published extensively on language policy, revitalization, and environmental policy alignment.
Education: BA in Politics, Sociology, and Philosophy (University of Galway); MA in Language Revitalization (Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, University of Galway); PhD in Celtic Studies (University of Edinburgh). He was awarded the triennial Joshua A. Fishman Award (2021) for his innovative dissertation on language sociology.
Research interests include the effects of austerity on minority languages, ecological crisis responses in language policy, and democratic confederalism's role in minority rights. His work bridges sociolinguistics with political economy, emphasizing grassroots activism and policy critique.
