Jane Clougherty is a Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health. Her academic journey includes a ScD from Harvard School of Public Health, an MSc from McMaster University, and an AB from the University of Chicago. Previously, she served at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (2010–2016) and worked at the NYC Department of Health (2008–2010).
Her research focuses on interdisciplinary environmental health science, particularly the combined effects of chronic social stressors and air pollution in urban communities. Key projects include studying intra-urban air pollution variations, GIS-based methods for exposure analysis, and the impact of social determinants on pharmaceutical efficacy in asthma trials. She leads NIH- and EPA-funded projects, including a current NIH study examining how social/environmental exposures influence asthma treatment outcomes.
Dr. Clougherty is a board member of the International Society for Exposure Science (ISES) and a member of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE). Her work has been recognized with the ISES Sally Liu Award for Outstanding New Investigator (2012).
Her research interests span environmental exposures, health disparities, urban health, violence and trauma, spatial analysis, and gender analysis. Notable contributions include linking neighborhood violence with asthma susceptibility and exploring how greenspace interventions affect fear of violence. She has published extensively on air pollution, social stress, and environmental justice, with a focus on methodological innovations in exposure assessment and interdisciplinary frameworks.
Grants include major funding from NIH, EPA, and Health Effects Institute. Her work bridges clinical trials, environmental epidemiology, and social determinants of health, emphasizing real-world applicability for vulnerable populations.
